STATEMENT OF THE COALITION TO SAVE NIGERIA (CSN) ON THE DEATH OF PROF. FESTUS IYAYI The Coalition to Save Nigeria (CSN) received with shock the death of Prof. Festus Iyayi, former national president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in an auto crash involving the convoy of the Kogi state governor, Idris Wada on tuesday, 12th November, 2013 in Lokoja. Prof. Iyayi was an accomplished scholar, author and unionist and a detribalized Nigerian who gave voice to the voiceless and defended the defenceless against arbitrariness and impunity by our public officers. With his death, the Nigerian revolutionary movement has been decapitated as Prof. Iyayi was one of the movements brain boxes in the struggle for a better Nigeria where equity, fairness and justice will reign. We have lost a committed comrade and an icon of the struggle for an egalitarian Nigeria. He was a true and authentic comrade who devoted his entire life to the struggle and died fighting for educational justice for the present and future generations of Nigerian students. We call on ASUU and the federal government to speedily resolve the remaining grey areas in their disagreement to enable the suspension of the current ASUU strike as a mark of respect to Prof. Iyayi. We offer our deep and profound condolences to his family, ASUU, University of Benin and the nations pro-democracy movement and praying to God to grant them the fortitude to bear this unfortunate, avoidable and irreplaceable loss. We use this opportunity to call for a comprehensive probe of the recklessness associated with the convoys of Nigerian public officers. A situation in which government officials terrorize innocent Nigerians on our roads with attendant casualties many of which go unreported is no longer acceptable. The time to act is now.
