STOCKTON -- Yesterday, 27 Delta Charter High School students and two 8th Grade students arrived at Bear Creek High School to compete with 13 other schools in their second league tournament of the year. The students participated in a variety of events including interpretation, persuasive speaking, informative speaking, original compositions, and debate. While some students gave prepared pieces, orations, and debates, others participated in events with limited preparation time ranging from 20 and 30 minutes to only two minutes! They spoke on a plethora of topics including national and international current event topics (they did not know which ones until 30 minutes before speaking-yikes), organ donation, ageism, making a difference, pregnancy brain, professional sports subsidies, privacy, internet anonymity and many others. Perhaps one of the most telling debate topics was the final round of parliamentary debate: “Fun is more important than work.” Students had to negate this resolution to win the final round and the they succeeded. The debate team is ranked in the top 10 percent of high schools in the nation and is the top team in five different counties.
