SUFISM,is called TASAWWAF in Arabic.IT mean The system of spiritualism which lead to the purification It also means moral perfection and purification.Those who practice sufism are call SUFIS. The leader of of the sufis is said to be HASSAN AL BASRI in IRAQ ,It has foundation in Al quran and Hadith . *Al quran 18:60: 35:15 O ye men !it is ye that have need of GOD :but GOD is the one free of all wants. Worthy of all praisein the second Hadith of al Nawawis collection when the Jibril asked the prophet of goodness (ihsan),the prophet replied :it is that you should worship GOD as though you see HIM,for though you cannot see HIM yet HE sees you the prophet Himself is sufi per excelelence,who is prototype of spiritual life in islam.His pre-occupation was GODs conciousness and he cried to the utmost to inculcate this into his campanions and they too strictly imitated him in all their actions. Notable SUFIS (mystrics)among the companins of the prophet were rightly guided caliph(khulafah ul rashidun)ashab suffa (companions of the terrace ) who stayed in mosque in madinah .Abu huraira was most famous among them.other Sufis among the companion were Abu alhari al ghifari and Salman the persian(iran). Hassan al basri(basra/bagdad) was considered the lerder of the sufis because he restated the same truth which the rophet preached,when he noticed that people were going materialistic.He use to quote AL quran 55:26 to 27 and hadith which saysleave in the world as a stranger or a traveller prominent sufis are junaid bagdadi from bagdad iraq,Ibrahim Adham ,Rabia Adawiya,Bazid of bastam khorrassan(iran),imam ghazali,Jalal al Dim Rumi,shaykh Akbar. The great shaykh Muhyideen ibn Arabi of spain,mansur al hallai(iran)Abdulqadir Jilani(northern iran)shaykh Ahmad tijjani from aim mad (algeria),shaykh uthman ibn Fodio (sokoto,Nigeria)may GOD sanctify their secrets. Susism was later metamorphosed into various Turraq(sufi orders or brotherhoods)tariqas ufi ordars or brother are many,would mentain few of them here. 1 QADIRYYAH it was founded by Abdulqadir of gilan,North iran .It has followers all over the would.the great mujadid reformer is shaykh UThman ibn Fodio was a member of this tariqa abdulqadir was born in gilan in 1078 A.D .He died at the age of 91 ,in 1166 A.D travelled to bagdad at the age of 18,studied there,and he was specifically famous for converting a large number of jews and christains into islam.He is well know and respected for his piety,toleration,learning and power of speech. 2 SHADHILIYAH It was founded by Abu madyan(1197 A.D)and developed by Ali shadhilhi of tunisia,north Africa,it has followers in north Africa ,Turkey and Rumania. 3 TIJJANIYYAH it was founded by Abu Abbas Ahmad ibn muhammad sahim(known as shaykh Ahmad tijani.He was born in aim mad (fourth algeria)in 1737 A.D and died in fas (1815 A.D and buried in tha zawiyah (monastry).he founded Tijjaniyyah tariqa which is the prominent tariqa in north and west Africa today. 4 SANNDHIYYAH it was founded in 1837 by shaykh Muhammad ibn Ali as somarise.It is a branch of qadiriyyah.its followers are founded in north east africa.
