It is estimated that over 9.5 million people are in need of aid. All the Catholic Dioceses of Canada have been asked to take up a special collection which, through the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (D&P), would be used to aid the victims of this natural disaster. (The Government of Canada has pledged a matching contribution of all funds raised before December 10th by eligible charities, D&P being one of these eligible charities.) This special collection will be taken at all the Masses in the parishes of this diocese weekend, November 23rd and 24th. (Due to the seriousness of this emergency appeal, next week’s previously scheduled Shepherds’ Fund collection will be postponed until the weekend of December 7th - 8th.) Further information about this disaster and the emergency assistance being offered through D&P can be found at: devp.org(devp.org/donate/Philippines). Those wishing their donation to be included on their parish year end charitable donation receipt are asked to place the donation in an envelope on which they have written the words Aid to the Philippines as well as their name, address and/or parish envelope number. This feast day was begun by Pope Pius XI in 1925 at a time when it seemed like respect for Christ and the Church was disappearing. This feast is meant to refocus faith and respect in the Kingship of Jesus and to remind us that Christ should be the King of our hearts and lives. There’s a really good video on YouTube, called The Solemnity of Christ the King, that explains this feast and has some pretty good music too! Why don’t you check it out?
