SURREY’S gritting lorries have treated more than 6,000 miles of road since Christmas Eve, the equivalent of travelling from London to Tokyo. Sub-zero temperatures greeted people returning to work after the Christmas break, as overnight temperatures reached as low as minus-five degrees celsius in parts of Surrey. As temperatures plummeted, the county council’s fleet of 39 gritters made 179 trips in preparation for icy conditions, including on Christmas Day. Surrey County Council has stockpiled 16,000 tonnes of salt this year at depots across Surrey, to avoid a repeat of the salt-shortages of years gone by.
