SWIS Gyan Yagya Talk Woodland School 07 Sep 2013. I thank Mrs Satya Bala Thapa (Principal) and Dr Sudha Mishra (SWIS) for organizing the Inspiration Talk. We covered: 1. Consecutive numbers: Adding numbers 1+2+3+...+10, 1+2+3+...+20, 1+2+3+...+30 and 1+2+3+...+100. Children enjoyed this part a lot and were advised not to guess but add with "honesty" and patience as every body knew counting and addition. This was a more about character/psychology/approach than Math. 2. Students were asked to make what they knew unique in Origami (paper model). One boy Dipak made a car. 3. Dipak also sang a song for us all. 4. One teacher was brave/frank to come upto dias and ask a Math query about symbols in Arithmetic. 5. Two Gita shlokas are recited everyday at School. Students were told their number (Gita 4.7 and 4.8) and meaning and also informed that whole life remains to unravel the inner meaning of Gita shlokas. 6. One bright boy "Sohel" who aspires to be Software Engineer was given challenge to make "Sixty Degree" angle using only plane paper. He came pretty close and almost solved it. 7. It was heartening to note that every one in the school knew every other person by name, perhaps due to small size of School. This is great, although weighs on the financial aspect. School rightly prides itself as having a very favorable teacher:pupil ratio. 8. Number of squares in a chess board type board consisting of 1, 4, 9 and 16 square blocks was discussed to arouse curiosity among all present. 9. We covered "permutations" or arrangements of [(a), (a,b) and (a,b,c)], this was done as puzzle and students were informed that this topic plays pivotal role in higher Math starting from Class XI itself. 10. Principal madam is deeply passionate about the all round development and welfare of not only the small children but she treats and remains equally concerned about the all round development and welfare of her small team of young teachers. She is doing a great job single handedly and now we have conveyed our wish to cooperate with her. Thanks: Over all it was a great interaction, we observed that most of the children aspire to be Doctors, Dipak wants to become Astronaut, Sohel aims to be Software engineer etc. Thankfully they are not aware of US Dollar versus INR game that is being played in Markets. It was a divine pleasure to see smiles on the innocent faces of children with gleaming eyes when they solved Math puzzles. A BIG thanks to the school from SWIS!
