Safety Tips: Living Alone Living alone can be scary regardless of the type of neighborhood you live in. Here are some tips to increase the security of your home and make you feel more confident in living alone: 1. Use motion sensor lighting as well as landscape lighting to light up areas around your home. Porch lighting is important to light up all entrances into the home. 2. Thick curtains and blinds will give you a sense of security and keep you from feeling like someone is watching you. 3. Thorny bushes under windows will discourage someone from hiding behind or climbing into a window. 4. An alarm system is always a way to make you feel more secure. However, if you can’t afford to have one installed, consider buying signs and stickers on-line in an attempt to make it look like you do have an alarm system. 5. Dogs are a great alarm system, but do not require a lot of time and energy. Even small dogs that bark a lot are a good way to alert you that something is up. 6. Locks and dead bolts locks are important in keeping intruders out. Always change the locks when you move into a new house. 7. Install a peep hole so you can see who is on the other side of the door before opening the door. 8. Make it look like a man lives with you by leaving boots on the front porch. Helpful hints from W.
