Said screenwriter Joseph Stefano, after being required to read Robert Blochs 1959 novel Psycho to prepare for his meeting with Hitchcock: I was very disappointed. Having loved all of Hitchcocks work, I had in mind THE 39 STEPS ... NORTH BY NORTHWEST ... something big, beautiful, suspenseful, with glamorous people and locations. People in Hitchcocks inner circle told me that they originally thought he was going to blow up the material, just use the basic idea, and film it in VistaVision and in Technicolor with big stars. PSYCHO has become such an iconic, indelible film that its difficult for some to imagine it conceived, cast or filmed any differently. But its fascinating to speculate what sort of movie it might have become had the director shifted courses and given it the old-style Hitchcock treatment. So, just for fun ... what if? ...
