Saints march over Stingrays “26 – 19” The South Florida Saints marched into Rutenberg stadium and handed the Stingrays their first loss of the season in a hard fought game. The Stingrays “Bruise Brothers” Defense started the scoring when Defensive End Kevin Green blocked a punt and fell on the ball in the end zone … the extra point was botched making the score “6-0” with only three minutes off the clock. The Saints offense returned to the field and found themselves in a third and twenty situation after consecutive sacks. Saints Quarterback Stu Armstrong then heaved an eighty yard bomb to speedster Kenny Ketchum who used his “4.3” speed to outrun the entire defense to pay dirt. The two point conversion was stopped knotting the score at “6-6”. Both teams’ offenses stalled and traded a series of punts until Stingray Linebacker Troy Green recovered a Saints fumble on the Saints twenty five yard line. Three plays later Quarterback Lonnie Young connected with Vance Saint Gourdin on a twelve yard pass …. The extra point was blocked making the score “12-6”. The Saints were forced to punt when the Stingrays defense forced a three and out putting the ball back in the hands of the Stingrays offense with five minutes left in the half. Young connected with Wide Receiver Steve Stillman on a twenty four yard scoring strike increasing the Stingrays lead to “19 – 6” at the half. The Saints opened the second half when Ketchum used his blazing speed once again and hauled in another seventy four yard bomb closing the gap to “19 – 12”. Free Safety Cory Hickson commented after the game “Ketchum is the fastest guy we have played against all season … after that second TD we made an adjustment and started jamming him off the line of scrimmage and shut him down for the rest of the game” Running Back BeBe Young lead the Stingrays offense attack and bullied his way down to the Saints ten yard line on the next drive. The Stingrays then started to self-destruct when a Young interception was returned to mid field. The Saints cashed in when scat back Willie Reed scampered three yards around end to knot the score at “19 – 19” The Stingrays would respond on the next drive with Young connecting with Stillman on a 45 yard pass completion. The play was called back due to a holding penalty and the Stingrays were forced to punt. On the next Stingray offensive possession, the Saints Free Safety Henry Reed caught a deflected pass and returned the Interception seventy yards to Stingrays five yard line. The “Bruise Brothers” Defense rose to the occasion and stopped the Saints on a fourth and one play to preserve the tied score. A holding penalty that negated a huge third down, thirty five yard completion from Young to Stillman forced the Stingrays to punt from deep in their own territory. The Saints started their game winning march from the Stingrays thirty yard line. Reed was the workhouse on the drive and leaped over the pile from one yard out with one minute remaining in the game for the winning score. “We cannot afford to make mistakes against good teams and end up beating ourselves” commented Head Coach Chris Morant “We have to learn from our mistakes and get back on the winning track again next week” The Stingrays host the Tampa Bay Patriots March 15th at Rutenberg Stadium with kickoff set for 7:00pm.
