Samoa doesnt celebrate Thanksgiving (although I like the spirit of it and think we should). No matter how many times I say I want to leave this place, the minute I do I want to come back. Because it will always be home. For Thanksgiving this year, I look at this country and what Im thankful for: 1. I am thankful for the coconut wireless that never fails to inform other people of my business before even I know anything about it. 2. I am thankful that we think nothing of going to another familys house to eat, watch their TV and borrow their ladder and never returning it. 3. I am thankful for policemen who make us late to work by holding up traffic every morning as they stroll down Beach Road playing trumpets and drums because it means that our biggest fear is not civil unrest, but only that they will play the national anthem wrong. 4. I am thankful for open Samoan fales that astound tourists because they ask how nobody goes straight in and steals everything. It is impossible because all Samoans write their names on their shirts, their bibles and their shoes and they can tell when you show up at church in, or with, them. 5. I am thankful for clubs like RSA which have warning notices outside for men: If you want to dance, bring your own girlfriend. 6. I am thankful for a place where we are all equal. And by equal I mean that yesterday was payday, and were all equally broke again today. Happy Thanksgiving :)
