San Jacinto Police Department Traffic Enforcement Officer Chevalier attended the 2014 Pasadena Police Motorcycle Skills Training and Competition at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA on Thursday, June 4, 2014. The focus of the event is to encourage learning and reinforcement of basic police motorcycle handling skills, which have been proven to be perishable skills if not practiced. The competition included several events. The solo rider competition is the event where a rider negotiates several designated patterns for time. In this event there are penalties for touching a cone, knocking over a cone, putting a foot down to support the motorcycle and walking the motorcycle to reposition it in the pattern. A rider is disqualified if he rides outside of the pattern or drops his motorcycle. Deputy Chevalier completed the course with a raw time of 2:11. With the 3-second penalty for knocking over a cone, he finished with a score of 2:14. The winning time was 1:45, ridden by Sgt. Chan of the San Jose Police Department. The tennis ball relay is a course where a rider must pick a tennis ball from the top of a traffic cone and transfer it to the top of another cone about 50 feet away. The rider must then make a u-turn and do it again and ride to his partner. When he reaches the start/finished line, the partner rider performs the course. Fastest time wins. Deputy Chevalier rode the course with Officer Johnsen of the Fontana Unified School District Police Department. Their fastest time was 45 seconds. The winning time was 36 seconds. The tandem rider course is an event where two motorcycles are connected by a 3-foot cord from protection bar to protection bar. The riders had to weave between pylons then made a complete circle around each of three more sets of pylons. Fastest time wins!! Deputy Chevalier and Officer Johnson finished third by riding the course in 30.8 seconds. The winners rode the course in 30.0 seconds. Second place was 30.06 seconds. Deputy Chevalier and Officer Johnsen had never met before the competition and decided to pair up late that morning. The members of the San Jacinto Police Departments Motor Squad undergo at least two weeks of station level pre-training with an motor training officer to get the basics of handling a police motorcycle. The officers are then required to attend an intense 80 hour training course that includes blocks of instruction on slow and high speed riding, collision avoidance, basic traffic stop fundamentals, high-risk traffic stop considerations, pursuit riding and using the motorcycle for cover during a shooting incident. When motor officers graduate the school, they return to their station and ride under the supervision of a motor training officer for two to four weeks before going solo. Residents of San Jacinto can rest assured that when they see a San Jacinto Police Motor Officer riding down the road, he is very well trained and is always on the look-out for those who may cause hazards by their unsafe behavior on the roadways.
