Sarah Oak performing two fantastic pieces during the open mic portion of our last slam! In Sarahs own words: Poetry, for me, is about sharing the mundane conversations I have with myself on a day-to-day basis--pinning down all my small fears and turning them into art. Up 9 (Cedar Lake and Back) was inspired by this bizarre social experiment conducted this past march called Twitch Plays Pokemon, where an online streaming site set up a copy of Pokemon Red so that anyone could input commands. For me, as an outdoor educator whos also a fan of video games, it was incredible to see so many people come together with such an acute sense of this very specific space. When I tried to explain this to fellow outdoor eddies and camp counselors, it usually prompted a kids these days sort of response. The poem came out of the frustration of trying to convince people on both sides of the debate that the other side is valid.
