Sat, slack-jawed, though nearly 3 hours of static interviews w/most members of Yes plus some of their associates in doc YES: CLASSIC ARTISTS. As a doc, very slack and unimaginative--not-very-edited segments of talking heads all individually shot in one dull sitting location. Some points: 1) Overall, none of them came across as the sort of humans capable of making the insane magic that they made intermittently throughout their career. That is, none of them SEEMED like cosmic angels from the future. Seemed mostly kind of like dullards, actually. Likely the documentarians fault. 2) Why werent they asked to defend the decision to, after a self-titled debut, also call their third LP THE YES ALBUM? It has been inconveniencing fans for decades. 3) This is a VERY thorough doc, every album and personnel decision directly related to Yes business is discussed and at some length. It seems to have been shot in the 2006-07 range and they already mostly seem a bit bemused as to what they can and should do next with the name and legacy. To me, Im pleased with the Benoit/other Jon era though undoubtedly other fans and/or members are not. Bruford was already mocking them as a pathetic cover band in this. 4) Wakeman seemed a lot more reasonable, sweet, and dedicated to Yes than I would have expected. 5) Banks was amusingly tho lightly bitter. 6) Wonder if Tony Kaye and Sherwood refused to participate? Certainly would be insulting if they got CUT from this megadoc, or not invited. 7) Reminded that any fan of Yes who doesnt love DRAMA is silly. Some of the most dynamic, complicated, powerful music they ever made. 8) There are maybe 12 minutes of concert/video footage of them performing music, which was fine with me; this works as sort of a video book oral history, but given how little there was, wondering why they bothered at all.
