Saturday afternoon I received the news that my father had passed away. Those that know me well will know that he left my sister and I with my Mum when I was just three. Since then hes always been around the town but never there for us when we needed him. I found out today he never wanted to leave the town where his children and grandchildren were. His health had deteriorated over the last year and he had tried reaching out to me, but I constantly ignored it. Maybe I was punishing him in the only way I knew, maybe I just didnt know how I felt. Maybe it was pride stopping me. Whilst not being the greatest father to us both, nor to my other sister and brother those that knew him classed him as a good friend, if he was a good man to know then I am happy with that. He was never bad to us, thats one thing that can be said. Looking through his belongings today and one thing is apparent, he loved us dearly but for one reason or another was scared to do anything about it. For all those absent fathers out there, never lose contact with your children, drag yourself over broken glass to show them you love them, because one day you may stop getting the chance. I wish I had given him that chance, but it would have been hard to build something so late. Maybe we could of had our peace. I hope you find yours now Dad, I forgive you. I hope you can forgive me. I will do all you asked for in your letter. x
