Saturday night and a special concert evening with Doug Haywood and Mike Breen! Doors open at 7:15pm and the music starts at 8pm. Admission $10 at the door. Doug Haywood has written songs, made hit records, and toured and performed with several household names in country rock beginning in the 1970s. He began his professional career in Phoenix, AZ, when he and his two buddies, pedal steel player Ed Black and drummer Mickey McGee joined Goose Creek Symphony. The band opened up a show for Linda Ronstadt at the Whiskey a Go Go in Los Angeles. As a result, Ronstadt convinced Haywoods two friends to come over and play in her band, which they did for a couple of years. Haywood would join them some months later after devoting some time performing in Bobbie Gentrys band as her single, Ode to Billy Joe, was climbing the charts. These were among the first boosts to Haywoods career, but they would not be his last. Being the new kid in town had its disadvantages, most of which were financial, but Haywood found ways to overcome these obstacles. He wanted to join the musicians union but didnt have enough money for the initiation fee, so he worked out an arrangement with the union whereby he would picket a night club, Gazarris for about 15 dollars a night until the fee was paid off. The union also sent him out on a couple of jobs, one of which was a Mod Squad shoot where he played the part of a folksinger in a coffeehouse. His song wound up playing in the background of the episode which got him into ASCAP, and the royalties, though shrinking somewhat, still continue to roll in. What seemed like a pattern of trading up eventually led to a long and fruitful working relationship with Jackson Browne in 1973. Over the next 20 years Haywood would spend thousands of hours in the studio supplying bass, organ, and vocal parts on more than a dozen of Brownes albums. And, as is generally the case, following each release there would be a rigorous tour schedule to promote each record, adding up to hundreds of thousands of road and air miles and hundreds of concert performances logged by the talented music veteran. (Excerpts are from the Artist Biography by Tom Kealey) Haywoods songs have been recorded by The Dillards, David Lindley, Jennifer Warnes, Mason Williams, Dillard-Hartford-Dillard and many others. As a singer, Doug has sung on recordings and/or onstage with: Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon, Graham Nash and many others. Doug began putting out CDs of his material in 1993. He is currently working in Los Angeles on Jacksons new album. Mike Breen is an extremely talented guitar, dobro and mandolin accompanist as well as a fine singer and songwriter. Mike has played on Haywoods recordings and plays with other artists in the studio, live with his own band, and as a soloist. Mike Breen began his musical career in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania playing guitar and singing bluegrass music with his best friend Kenny Thompson. After a few years at Penn State University, Mike moved to Phoenix, Arizona and immediately got a gig in a folk duo called “Smith and Breen” performing at the Salt Cellar restaurant and bar. During this time Mike met many musicians and songwriters including Darcie Deaville, now from Austin, Texas, whom he collaborated with on stage and in the studio and co-wrote her much acclaimed song “Icy Barrel of a Loaded Gun” on her debut CD and also on her Redwing release “Tornado in Slo Mo.” During the late 70’s and early 80’s Mike performed a the Windmill Dinner Theater in Scottsdale, Arizona as a member of “The Barnstormers” a New Christy Minstrel style group. After a brief stint as a booking agent Mike took up the electric guitar and began playing country music with “Jim Bartlett and The Blue Hollar Band” who worked consistently doing corporate events and private parties. This led to a stint with several bands at an 1880’s Western Town called Rawhide and after a few years Mike got the call to join the Red River Opry Band that producer Mark Prentice was putting together for a 1000 seat venue in Tempe that featured some of the greatest players in town. Mike released 2 CDs in the nineties to critical acclaim and started to have other artists record his songs which eventually led to a passion for recording. Also, during this period of time Mike got his first b bender telecaster which would eventually lead him to write and record a ground breaking CD called “Mescal Mary and Other B Bender Guitar Instrumentals.” Tickets are $10 at the door.
