Saw a performance of Music In Twelve Parts last night by the Philip Glass ensemble. Great stuff. Probably not their best performance of this piece, but fantastic to see the man in the flesh and most of the time the music hit some strange mark that is the nature of Glasss more esoteric works, and at points was sublime. It is such a long and challenging work for the musicians, some might say for the listener as well, but sometimes the listener should be challenged. It had an audience of 2,500. Not bad for a concert with music only by a contemporary composer. Seeing Steve Reich tonight performing several pieces including Music for Eighteen Musicians.
