Saw it tonight! Martin Scorseses first film...I have now seen the entire canon of his feature films (20 in 46 years) and the most fascinating thing about this film was principal Harvey Keitels love making sequence with Anne Collete in which The Doors song The End, was the score and the way it was shot and barrowed (stolen?) by Francis Ford Coppola for opening sequence of Apocalypse Now when Martin Sheen drinks himself into a stupor. I think Coppola (an artistic contemporary of Scorsese) probably asked permission from Scorsese to steal artistically the scene to adapt for his Vietnam/Joseph Conrad epic. It lessons in my mind Apocalypse which I idolized in 1979 but could not understand (at the time) why my film appreciation mentor Paul Frizler didnt feel the same way but as my Conrad literary and cinaliteracy has expanded with time I see how utterly flawed Apocalypse truly is and why my dear departed (he passed ten years ago in body but has never passed in spirit) teacher felt the way he did about a film I thought was so seminal at the time-the getting of artistic appreciation does take a lifetime to develope just as the gaining of wisdom is complex and difficult. ***out of 4
