Saxby Chambliss leaves the US Senate after 12 years, often cast as a reasonable and dignified guy if only due to the relative character of so many of his colleagues. I will always remember him as gaining office through one of the most loatheseome and sleazy campaigns ever. In 2002, Chambliss ads attacked his opponent Max Cleland, questioning his patriotism and his willingness to defend America. Cleland was a lifetime public servant who won the Medal of Honor after leaving 3 of his 4 limbs on the battlefield in Vietnam. Cleland prompted Chamblisss attack because he asked too many questions about whether the Iraq war was a good idea. Adios, Saxby. Forever a poster child for campaign sleaze.
