Seargent Lonergan 16.02.14 Declares the Innings Closed Campbelltown Camden District Cricket Club & Camden District Representative Coach Peter Lonergan has declared his innings closed after serving the people of NSW as a career long Police Officer. Retiring from the Police Force exactly 36 years to the day since he joined, Peter’s colleagues at the Macquarie Fields Local Area Command made his final exit from the station one that he will always remember. Pete, accompanied by his family, left the Macquarie Fields Police Station shortly after 2.00pm for the last time today. The sound of a lone Police Piper could be heard as the Pol Air Chopper swooped past the station returning to observe Peter’s exit from the cloudless sky. Over fifty serving officers formed a “Guard of Honour” outside the Macquarie Fields Police Station. They were joined by representatives of the many local youth that Peter had also served. Four junior representative female cricketers from the CDCA and Ghosts Cricket Club combined with Peter’s winter sportsmen, the Camden Rams Rugby League Juniors, in joining the “Guard of Honour”. Eliza Mallitt joined the three most recent Mollie Dive Shield Captains, Chloe Gray (2012), Yardley Polsen (2013) and Stephanie Ellsmore (2014) in seeing their coach’s colleagues salute a tremendous career. Detective Inspector Greg Inger, also a coach of young CDCA cricketers observed, “He is a big softy… deep, done under. This afternoon will have touched him. Pete’s a good bloke!” The name “Lonergan” has been synonymous with the Police Force for the past two generations. Peter had followed his father’s footsteps into law enforcement. The final tribute to Peter was a Police escort home. Ironically led by Highway Patrol Officer and former Ghosts keeper/batsman David Dykes. Throughout his career Peter has been awarded the distinguished Australian Police Medal to sit alongside the Allan Border Medal he received for services to the Cricket development. The Ghosts Cricket Club wish “Big” Pete all the best in retirement and we look forward to seeing him around the grounds and cricket nets of Campbelltown for many years to come. Well done mate!
