Security apparatus hailed: Zimbabwe assumed the chairmanship of the Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA) following the professional and disciplined nature of the country’s security apparatus, the State Security Minister has said. Cde Sydney Sekeramayi says the Zimbabwe Defence Forces is celebrating 33 years of defence excellence at a time when the country is giving security leadership to the continent. He said since Zimbabwe assumed the leadership of CISSA in May this year, it has become important for the security sector in Africa to strengthen coordination in the wake of the new threats of neo-colonialism. “We are happy that as Zimbabwe, we are now chairing the continental body of security and intelligence services. This shows that Africa has confidence in our leadership and we will ensure that we come up with strategies to counter the threats of neo-colonialism,” said Cde Sekeramayi. Turning to calls by the MDC-T for security sector reforms, Cde Sekeramayi said the party is clamouring for that at the behest of its handlers who want to weaken the security system for their sinister motives. CISSA was mooted in the wake of Zimbabwe’s interception of a plane-load of mercenaries who were on their way to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea to depose the government of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema on March 7, 2001 after the discovery of massive oil reserves off the gulf of Guinea. The move prompted intelligence services in Africa to establish CISSA in Abuja, Nigeria, on August 26, 2004, bringing together intelligence and security services from African Union (AU) member states. Zimbabwe is chairing the security body for the next year.
