Security is the degree of resistance to, or protection from, harm. - TopicsExpress

Security is the degree of resistance to, or protection from, harm. It applies to any vulnerable and valuable asset, such as a person, dwelling, community, nation, or organization. Quite a strong term “security” first image that come that comes to mind is brick wall, security gate But in the information technology sector Security can be a physical item, rules, policies, scripts and even decoys, the more creative a security/ network administrator Let’s look at the basics of security, in comparison to SA issues Firstly wrap your mind around the word Deterrent: Some time back I was at a family friend’s house and my cousin and I were there to fetch something, we arrived there in an old school SA dream car. There was a gentleman there who has about 20 odd years of experience in the lock smith industry. First thing that came out his mouth regarding the car was, if there is a Gear lock on the car (the car is the most high risk car in SA, fact) And we all had a good conversation about SA and security. The gentleman told us something interesting before the gear lock, Hi- Jacking was low in crime stats in SA even unheard of. Criminals used to just steal cars, as soon as the gear lock came into play Hi-jacking was the new thing. He actually told us that a gear lock was just a Deterrent, just like an alarm or any security item. His input was that if a criminal wants something they will get it, and all security items just deters crimes. Now let’s take the above and out in into to IT/ Firewall security perspective, if a hacker wants to get into to Domain, Network, and Server or onto your Wireless for free internet he will. So a firewall is just a deterrent and depend how good the person is managing it In South Africa there needs to be more of a market for Young South Africans to get into Information Technology Security, Internships and Learner-ships need to be available and an awareness of how to get into the security sector of IT. General maintenance of trying to prevent acts of hacking: Have a good AV installed Get a free spyware AV Don’t allow add on programs when you download freeware, they come with tracking cookies and worms Tracking cookies can hide within the registry system And just remember freeware general comes at a price Just practice ethical browsing and trust me you will be ok ALL My Blogs and Articles are just my Opinion Today’s society fails to realize a hacker is not a typical criminal they are people with normal jobs and most likely senior/ professional positions Hackers are intelligent and cannot be compared to the common criminal So most security systems are just deterrents and can be hacked depending on the motive All technology moves forward so to ways on how to penetrate these technologies Smart phones are becoming a big target as well.
