Seeing I am a little down on my luck today, I thought I should - TopicsExpress

Seeing I am a little down on my luck today, I thought I should write a little something to cheer me up which given my tastes is a cause for concern in itself. Rest assured gentle reader(s), no Mulder fanboying or Rachel-defending rants this time. Instead, lets dwelve into the realm of excellent litterary adaptation with the latest tv iteration of Conan Doyle sleuth namely Sherlock precisely the third series cliffhanger which is not one. I came accross a brillant theory, which you can find on the imdb board for the show that posits Moriarty only exists as the nom de guerre and false personality of one Richard Brooks who is presented as Moriarty real identity. With the help of a series of clues the theory further states Sherlock seeks to kill Richard Brooks and bring back Jim Moriarty. If this is it then, I must say this is thematically brillant.Because what underpins the whole show is the ethic of working in the shade. Mycroft for example holds only a minor post in Her Majestys government, and the only reason Sherlock kind of advertises his skills is that he is not as intelligent as his brother and thus has to wotk for money. Also notice that Mycroft has no problem showing himself as some sort of shadowy figure to Waston, this is because Watson is not your average doctor but a soldier who has seen what it takes to protect regular citizens. However, Brooks wants to spoil the party by creating the whole powerfull Moriarty only to debunk his creation and expose the public for the fools he thinks they are, thus shattering the tenous confidence lonk between the population and the state. That cant be allowed to happen .We must believe in Moriarty. If not England as presented on the show would fall. This is also a crushing personal defeat for Brooks whose entire dare I say psyche, is conditionned by the fact his true self is deemed uninteresting, a mere tv actor. His wish would be to unsmask Moriarty and prove Richard Brooks brillance. However, by driving him to kill himself first, Sherlock grapples control from him and his minions who, unable to act cleverly alone, will be easilly defeated like in the original text.Speaking of which Moffat and co are known to follow the spirit of the work rather than its letter nevertheless, there is one deviation I think is counterproductive. At the end of the episode we see Sherlock is still alive which defeats the purpose of the whole thing. For Conan Doyle intended his death to be permanent and is what makes the Empty House so potent. It would have been better, in my opinion, to keep it that way. Otherwise, the emotional impact and our capacity of identification with Watson is lost.
