Seeing all the footage today paying tribute to Robbie Flower made me glow on the inside - not just watching him, but being reminded of that era. Back in the 80s footy was footy - growing up watching SANFL then was a time of dressing gowns on the bench, lab coats for goal umpires, kick to kick and pack mark to pack mark. There were no second sirens for the crowd to take the field. No 50m lines. No line across the centre circle. And the teams all had their hard men dishing the ball outside to their wizards. Its so hard to have those memories inside you and yet thankfully, the SANFL still retains at least some of the magic of yesteryear. And thats what many of us hang on to when we venture out each week to watch our competition.
