Senator Mary Landrieu’s election prospects were already shaky - TopicsExpress

Senator Mary Landrieu’s election prospects were already shaky when she clumsily decided to take a page out of Obama’s handbook and accuse her state of being racist. Louisiana Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu said Thursday that the issue of race is a major reason that President Barack Obama has struggled politically in Southern states. “I’ll be very, very honest with you. The South has not always been the friendliest place for African-Americans,” Landrieu told NBC News in an interview. “It’s been a difficult time for the president to present himself in a very positive light as a leader.” Here’s why this was a really bad idea. Landrieu started the cycle with about 20 percent of the state’s white vote, but on Nov. 4 she won just 18 percent of that demographic—despite tens of millions of dollars national Democrats spent on her behalf. It’s telling that the Dem target was set as low as 20 percent. That’s already giving up. But she couldn’t even meet that goal and nearly came in third on the white vote. Bernie Pinsonat, an independent Louisiana-based pollster, puts Landrieu’s odds right near impossible. That is largely because of how far down Landrieu is with white voters with just weeks to go. I guess calling them racism didn’t win them over as much as she thought.
