Sense of Comparison Ohidur Rahman The best tool of jugdement is the sense of comparison. The sharper it is, the more perfect the judgement is. What is good for someone may not necessarily be so for some others. Everything has many shades, so does every one of the main colours—white, black, red, blue and green. For example, ‘white’ may not be exactly white. Different shades of ‘white’ make different other sub-colours such as off-white, gray, light white, dark white, etc. Distinguishing one colour from another is too tough before a lot of practice. It requires a strong eye-sight, sufficient light and perseverance as well. The same difficulty lies in judging one thing from the other and it deals with the sense of comparison. What is good or bad depends on its necessity, situation and context. It also matters who is dealing with it and how or the person dealt with. Shakespeare has indicated that nothing is good or bad, unless thinking makes it so. Let us look at the most common example, a line AB has been drawn. How can you make it smaller or bigger? The answer is well-known. If you draw another bigger line, AB will become smaller or vice versa. Comparing and choosing the right one gets more intricate if options are available. To be more specific, the more you have choices, the more it becomes tricky to select, though the more alternatives the better. For example, in an objective type question, four options are typically given to choose the right answer. Actually, the fewer choices the question has, the easier it becomes. Similary, while shopping in the best shopping mall, you must take longer time and pay keener attention to identify the best one. On the other hand, the cheapest and smallest shop will not take your time nor require your attention. But the thing is that its quality as well as beauty may not be up to the mark. Shakespeare in his comedies has shown ‘love’ at first sight. In other cases it is spontaneous, gradual or pre-planned. In case of a pre-planned ‘love’ the sense of judgement may play a vital role. A girl usually has alternative choices but is reluctant at times to judge and find the right one. She selects the boy comparing with the others according to the intensity and profundity of his love for her, no matter how well-matched or compatible he may be for her. She had better follow a common folk story. One cowboy was happy as he ate some cheap sweets in his dream. The other cowboy scolded him because he should have eaten the expensive sweets since everything is free of cost in a dream. To avoid pressure in a ceremony alternative food items are kept limited. If you have all kinds of soft drinks such as Pepsi, Coca-cola, 7-up, Mirinda, Fanta, etc. the guests will make their choices which will linger and create chaos. Renting a flat is very easy but selecting a suitable flat is absolutely difficult. Before you finalise you must consider and speculate a number of factors. If you have found a perfect flat with reasonable price, still you cannot guarantee the right choice. It may even happen that in the rainy season water gets stagnant and remains for a few months in front of the building. Some voters decide not to apply their franchise because no candidate seems worthy. Probably it is not good to refrain from casting their votes. What may be better is to judge them in different angles. Comparison should play the vital role to find out who is relatively better or worse, though there is every possibility of inappropriate judgement. To be exact in comparison depends on various factors or criteria. You need adequate and reliable data, ability to manipulate and permutate the data and so on. If we are adept at dealing with the judgement properly, we can be able to identify and make the right choice. Published in The Daily Peoples Time on 27 March 2014
