September 11 – How It Changed Us New York has always been a city that has made my blood race. The feelings of great anticipation and excitement is always present when i go into NYC or even outside of it like I did earlier this year when I went to WrestleMania. Today is 9/11. On September 11, 2001, I was in the 5th grade at recess. We did not know what was going on at the time, but you just knew something was wrong when it was announced to us. Regardless of the setting, when the news broke and it began to slowly seep into our minds what had actually occurred, the feelings were powerful. The futile sense of “what can we do to help” took over. The sense of loss was staggering. The days after September 11 also carried feelings – tremendous sadness, heartfelt caring, a desire to hug your loved ones extra tight and to send love and empathy to strangers as that was all one had to offer. But most of all, the feeling of ‘togetherness’ was strong. It felt like a warm blanket of caring was wrapped around each and every one of us. And it lasted…for awhile. When I think back to that September day in New York City, Washington, and Flight 93. I am always reminded of how we are all in this world together. Typically, we don’t recognize this fact as we’re so busy disagreeing with one another. But on THAT day and the days that followed, we were connected. We felt it deep in our bones. Perhaps we could demonstrate some of that caring that was so evident on September 11, that togetherness. Perhaps we will recognize that we cannot separate ourselves from each other. What happens to one, happens to us all. It is as it should be. A huge thank you to our heroes on that day for risking their lives for us.
