September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. In India from 1984 to 2013 the literacy rate increased up to 74% from 44, but just like other sectors this percentage is just meaning less. According to one survey, the elementary education budget has more than doubled since 2007-08, going just under Rs. 69,000 cr. to just over Rs. 1.47 lakh crore in 2012-13. As a society, we now acknowledge that every child between the ages of six and fourteen has the right to a "free and compulsory education". But what sort of education are we providing? The most recent figures in the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), shows an unbelievable image. Among the head line figures for Class V students in rural areas: 58.2 % of children cannot read at a Class II level; 46.5 % of students can not solve simple two-digit subtraction problems with borrowing"; and 75.2 % of students can not solve basic division problems. Only just over 50 % of students in class III can recognize number from 1 to 100. just shocking...!!
