Sermon Notes Union Church of Manila March 30, 2014 Lord of the Sabbath Luke 6: 1-11 Pastor Steve Luke 6:1-11 (NLT) 1 One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of wheat, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grains. 2 But some Pharisees said, You shouldnt be doing that! Its against the law to work by harvesting grain on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus replied, Havent you ever read in the Scriptures what King David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4He went into the house of God, ate the special bread reserved for the priests alone, and then gave some to his friends. That was breaking the law, too. 5 And Jesus added, I, the Son of Man, am master even of the Sabbath. 6 On another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was teaching. 7 The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched closely to see whether Jesus would heal the man on the Sabbath, because they were eager to find some legal charge to bring against him. 8 But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, Come and stand here where everyone can see. So the man came forward. 9 Then Jesus said to his critics, I have a question for you. Is it legal to do good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing harm? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it? 10 He looked around at them one by one and then said to the man, Reach out your hand. The man reached out his hand, and it became normal again! 11 At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to discuss what to do with him. > the healing of a man with a withered hand - something that Pastor Steve can closely identify with. > we dont have to be paralyzed to experience withered life. We need healing for a withered life - when we cant feel anything and can feel dead. > Jesus says I am The Lord of the Sabbath (day of the rest) 5 Questions: 1. What is the Sabbath? - this refers to the 4th commandment, day to declare freedom - to declare a day as Sabbath, it is to say that we are not slaves 2. Why do we need the Sabbath rest? - our relationship with work is out of whack Trends: a. Jobs are insecure b. We are all overworked c. Technology d. Psychological and social pressure towards work - watch the Chariots of Fire - Eric Liddell did not run on the Sabbath, as running did not define him, unlike Abraham 3. Where do we find this Sabbath rest? - we do not find rest from the laws, but hypocritical Pharisees - Jesus answered the priests accusations by citing the story about David and his companions (1 Samuel 21). - it is not where but who 4. Who is the Sabbath rest? - JESUS! - Sabbath rest is to be SATISFIED - refer to the creation story - It is Gospel rest in Jesus - read Matthew 11:28 - Jesus claims to be God by declaring Himself as Lord of the Sabbath. 5. How then do we get Sabbath rest? - Sabbath rest is about restoration. - Jesus did not do away with the Sabbath, for He is The Lord of Sabbath Only when one understands that Jesus is the Sabbath Rest will we be practical about Sabbath. Sabbath rest thought suggestions: 1. Take time off from your work 2. Can be active or inactive 3. Time with family 4. Act of liberation 5. Act of trusting God (worship) 6. Find accountability Sabbath is about rest-oration. My rest is not found in my work nor anything else but in Jesus.
