Sermon teaser for Sunday morning (9 June 2013): “Hearts to Stone” (Leviticus 24:10-23; John 8:1-11) It is probably a truism that almost everyone in a biblically influenced society knows at least one Bible verse: “Judge not lest you be judged” (Matthew 7:1). Certainly this truth must never be minimised; it should have a sobering effect on how we interact with one another. But this being said, I fear that it is often “disfigured” to the point that it becomes maximised in a perverse way. And the results, particularly upon the local church, can be devastating. All too often this truth is misinterpreted and misapplied and therefore we neglect our responsibility to confront sin in the church. Such neglect results in the name of God being blasphemed rather than hallowed (Romans 2:24; see Isaiah 52:5; Ezekiel 36:22). In short, the New Testament endorses the principles of church discipline as revealed in Leviticus 24. And as I trust that we will see, we too need to guard against having hearts of stone if we will ever develop hearts to stone.
