Seven Hundred GVL Employees in Kpanyan Trained in Ebola Prevention Measures SINOE COUNTY, Liberia – Golden Veroleum’s Ebola Task Force (Kpanyan) Sep 9th, instituted a compulsory Ebola training for employees stationed there. The two-week educational workshop is intended to expose every single employee to the fundamental knowledge to decrease the possibility of the deadly virus spreading to GVL operational areas and surrounding communities. The training, theme “Together We Can Prevent Ebola,” is being held simultaneously both at the #GVL Clinic and field offices encourages employees to understand and believe that the virus is real, that early medical attention and other preventive measures which include the avoiding of contact with sick persons’ bodily fluids and the eating of bats, monkeys and other bush meat which are believed to natural Ebola host. During the training many employees and community members were exposed to images of Ebola victims for the first time since the outbreak began in Guinea in Dec. 2013 after which it spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal, and is believed to be the most deadly outbreak in history. In addition to employee awareness, the company has embarked upon several other campaigns, included the distribution of soap, fuel, cholrine, buckets, informative posters and handout and a recently-concluded door-to-door campaign in Sinoe and Grand Kru Counties, which included Grigsby Farm, Butaw, David Town, Tuoh, Compound, Snogbay, Tarjuowon, Sorokken, Kpanyan and Bloah. According to GVL Occupational Health and Safety Officer William Tweh, the aim at having workers and community dwellers see for themselves those affected by the Ebola virus, its signs and symptoms, and damages caused to the lives of Liberians and to the Liberian economy. “We want to make sure our partner communities are convinced that Ebola is real. We are showing Ebola films usually during the evenings when residents return from their farms and work sites. Our films are shown in open areas to avoid congestions or body contact,” said Tweh Francis Mondubue, paramount chief of Chu-chu Chiefdom has praised GVL for the move. This she said is a powerful tool for convincing residents of her chiefdom. “Most of my people don’t know how to read and write. So when they see the movie or the company comes to speak directly with them, it give a powerful statement about the company and its commitment to Liberia,” she said. Last week, GVL’s Leadership coordinated a statement with other large-scale regional employers to global media calling for an increased and more coordinated effort from the world community. The statement urged the international community to pool its resources and lend support to help reverse the virus and enable West African countries, such as Liberia, to recover as swiftly as possible from dealing with the epidemic.
