Several people this week have asked me how Wiley, our once feral - TopicsExpress

Several people this week have asked me how Wiley, our once feral outdoor kitty of 15 years was doing in our basement. Over the past three years, she was allowing us to touch her and pet her some through the window where we put food out for her through in our sunroom. This year, for the first time, Wiley stayed by our patio door one night shivering from the cold that was the beginning of our December weather. She did not go back to her comfy cave in our lean too but leaned on the door shivering. We always knew one day she would be ready to come inside. That was the day. I scruffed her, brought her through the window and into a carrier and she LET ME DO IT. That WAS the sign I knew She was ready for sure. And I am so glad we got her inside before the really bad arctic polar vortex hit this winter. She has been in our basement since. she has a hiding place, and a comfy bed up high on a shelf. I would go down and play with her with a long handled toy and she would turn around and bat and play. We had established a play/petting relationship, but we were never standing above her or she would run away. Today I made the comment that some day shes going to come upstairs to see whats going on. AND tonight we were watching TV and Miss Wiley not only came upstairs ONCE but she came upstairs again. First time she went right to the food bowls, looked at us and ate. Then to the water bowls and then over in the kitchen to see what was on the treat plates. Hmmmm, do you think shes been upstairs before? Id say so. But not when we were home or maybe at night when everyone is asleep. She wandered around the table, rubbed her pheromones on the chairs, checked out the sunroom and came and sat under the dining table in a proud upright position where she proceeded to stay for a half hour watching. Watching all the cats. Watching us. Watching TV. Then, she disappeared into her indoor cave in our basement. I did not know how long this was going to take before she decided to come upstairs when we were there. We were delighted to see her. She knows her name and she just sat proudly watching as if to say, Look at ME Im being so brave. I know she wants to be part of the family and she loves other cats. Next... I expect to see her at the top of the stairs when Wanda feeds in the mornings to get her canned food. Wanda always takes her a plate down and before Wanda gets upstairs she sees Wiley head for the plate. It wont be long now til she truly is part of our upstairs family. Go Wiley!!
