Shame of a Nation...... Ayo Akinfe wrote: [1] I for one am not surprised at the heroes welcome Al-Mustapha received in Kano upon his release [2] I gather hundreds of thousands thronged out on the street to welcome him and his arms were weary from waving to all of them [3] The only thing that surprises me here is what Frederick Fasheun is doing with him. That development caught I for one totally unawares as I did not see it coming and am still bewildered by it [4] This is not new in Nigeria as I recollect when Deprieye Alams was released from prison, the whole of Yenagoa stood still for about two days [5] Essentially, Nigeria is still built upon primordial and ethnic lines and people will always welcome "one of their own" whatever his or her crime [6] We have this knack of blaming the government and elite for all our woes but you have to ask yourselves if the people are any better [7] I recollect when OJ Simpson was released in Los Angeles. he walked into a restaurant and everyone walked out in protest to show their disgust [8] Even when we disagree with the verdicts of the judiciary or with government policy, ordinary people can make their voices heard by shunning and ostracising personae non grata [9] Anyone who thinks the Nigerian people are any better than their leaders just needs to visit a hospital and see how the staff will maltreat patients, be unconcerned about their health needs and adopt a non-chalant approach to their life or death [10] For Nigeria to go anywhere, the first part of the revolutionary process must be to change the way we think and shift our mindset. For now, we deserve leaders like Al-Mustapha who murder us willy nilly.
