Shark Bay, in the Carnarvon bioregion of WA, is where the extensive deserts of Australia meet the coast. It is unique in many ways - stromatolites, other salt-tolerant life forms such as the Hamelin cockle (Fragum erugatum), and an extensive refugium for native fauna. It also has a special flora, including extensive seagrass beds, with over 600 species of plants of which some 5% have conservation status.
