Sharon Shepherd: Attracting and retaining skilled labour and - TopicsExpress

Sharon Shepherd: Attracting and retaining skilled labour and talent is a global problem, and we are not immune. With so many options available in a fluid marketplace we must become creative and competitive as we compete against other communities. I intend to work with local stakeholders in our academic and business communities at improving methods for attracting talent and encouraging entrepreneurship. We could become known in the technology world by hosting a hackathon event. We must work together on promoting Kelowna across the country and abroad. However, my vision of Kelowna extends beyond improving processes and relationships. If we are to retain top talent, skilled labour and increased investment, we must also focus on creating a high-quality of life for all residents by investing in our community. I will lead a number initiatives over the next four years, such as the continued revitalization of downtown and City Park, the development of the various town centres in Rutland, Glenmore and South Pandosy, the protection of our lakefront, the continued success of our business community, the growth of our technology sector, and the importance of our air and water quality. The better Kelowna becomes, the easier it will be to attract and retain needed Human Resources. Finally, we must recognize that our economy is not independent, but a member of a larger family of Valley municipalities. Success in Kelowna means success for the Valley and vice versa. If elected I intend to continue the efforts that I started as mayor of Valley-wide initiatives and projects to promote growth and prosperity throughout our region. In closing, I am a business woman that cares about business in our city and I have the experience - through politics, through community involvement, and through my own personal career to lead this city over the next 4 years.
