She walked around like a zombie. All emotions drained out of her. Her eyes stared at me blankly, I could have been a wall and she wouldn’t look at me differently. Her gaze fell, she walked on. Her walk, the way her hands moved, how her neck was erect yet her eyes were fixed on the ground. If she could refuse to breath, she would. I ran after her. As I stretched my hand to tap on her shoulder, she abruptly stopped. She turned to look at me in slow motion. I was transfixed on the spot, not for fear, No! I stopped, for a moment, I wanted to turn back and take to my heels. I looked around and noticed that apart from her and myself, there was no other soul around. The silence was crippling. Not even frogs dared croak or birds dared perch on the nearby bushes. Even the trees nearby looked scared, they didn’t sway or even bend towards the house. They all leaned away as though trying hard to move away from the house. The house had walls made of red earth and topped by white river mud. The rusty iron roof looked like it could be blown away by the slightest of winds. Half bricks and logs of wood desperately tried to hold the roof in place. “Come in” My thoughts were interrupted. I almost jumped out of my skin! Unperturbed by my reaction, her stare still emotionless, she motioned me into the house. ...
