Sheer brutality !This man was shot because he asked a policeman to pay for the beer which the policeman bought POLICE BRUTALITY AND MAN INHUMANITY TO MAN: This is Mr. Joseph Martins a bricklayer popularly called mensonin Abuja. He went to a drinking joint last Saturday 19th October, 2013 at Utako area of Abuja to watch Liverpool Match. At the drinking joint, he met some people and one Mobile Police Officer in uniform, armed with AK 47 Assault riffle loaded with about 60 bullets who was also drinking in uniform. The Mopol with Force number 354657 is named Sgt. Oludare Ariyo and attached to Special Protection Unit base 7 FCT-Abuja and was enlisted into the Nigerian Police on 1st July, 2000. He was posted to guard duty at RCC Construction Company on this fateful day. This Mobile Policeman bought a bottle of Gulder beer and refused to pay the bar tender who was a small lady and was walking away. Due to this, Mr. Joseph Martins intervene and told the Mopol not to use his uniform to intimidate and cheat an innocent girl whose master cannot hear the story if money is incomplete. This Mopol became angry and was quoted to have said I will kill you and lose my job.... True to his threat, he took his gun and shot the said Mr. Joseph Martins in his thigh close to his power house and completely shattered his thigh bone. The angry Nigerians who were watching match at that joint on hearing the gun shot ran for safety but later re-grouped and overpowered this trigger-happy policeman and disarmed him after which they called the D.P.O Utako that arrested this Mopol and took the riffle for safe keeping. Mr. Joseph Martins was dumped at Accident & Emergency Ward of Wuse General Hospital by the policemen after restoring peace and the bullet which has broken his bone (according to the X-ray) is yet to be removed because no one is ready to pay the bill. I was in the hospital this afternoon to visit this victim with some members of my NGO having been moved by this pathetic and annoying story and we ensured that this harmless Nigerian was attended to despite the strike. He has now been referred to National Hospital for surgery and further treatment but the hospital is on strike. The guy is now being taken to Cidacrest Orthopaedic Hospital, a private clinic in Abuja with debilitating bill. I am using this medium to call on the Inspector General Of Police and FCT Police Commissioner to come to the aid of Mr. Joseph Martins maimed by one of their men whose conduct is infamous and highly unprofessional. The era of kill and go is gone as it is now kill and carry! I call on all Nigerians who know the contact of IGP, AIG Zone 7 and Commissioner of Police FCT to point their attention to this posting for action as I and my team tried in vain to locate this Mopol involved to no avail as our visit to Utako Police Division yielded no fruit as we were told that he has been taken out on investigation! May God save us in Nigeria! JUSTICE MUST BE DONE! Tolu Babaleye writes from Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
