Sheriff Brian Burnett reports an injured climber was rescued from the south side of Mt Goode in the North Cascades National Park on Sunday morning. The climber, Michael McCarthy of Seattle was injured while repelling down the mountain Saturday evening. RIVERCOM dispatch and the Sheriff’s Office initially received an emergency beacon activation report from the International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) at 9:20pm on Saturday evening. The coordinates for the beacon plotted to the 8,300 foot level on the south aspect of Mt Goode. The situation on the mountain was unknown at that time. Sheriff’s Office SAR coordinators worked with the National Park service to organize a helicopter response to the coordinates on Sunday morning. A National Park Service helicopter located two climbers at the location. It was determined the male climber was injured and immobile. A radio was lowered to the subjects, and eventually two park rangers were inserted to the patient’s location. McCarthy had suffered a compound fracture of an arm and possible back injuries during his fall. The female climber was uninjured. A hoist capable helicopter was requested and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office SnoHawk1 responded to the scene to extract McCarthy. He was flown to Providence Medical Center in Everett for treatment.
