Showers bring respite from heat Temperature down by 4 degrees Srinagar, Aug. 1: Kashmir received light to moderate rainfall on Thursday bringing respite to the people from the scorching heat. The temperature will remain between 28 to 30 degree Celsius till Sunday, Met office said. Director Meteorology, Sonam Lotus told Greater Kashmir that rainfall was recorded in several parts of the State. “This was due to the western disturbance and Monsoon current and it will continue till Sunday,” he said. Sonam Lotus said Srinagar recorded four millimeters of rainfall and reports of heavy rainfall were received from some places of Jammu division. He said that though heavy rainfall was not expected till Monday but there could be light rain on Saturday and Sunday mornings maintaining maximum temperature between 28 to 30 degree Celsius. “Year 2013 has witnessed more rains as compared to last three years, recording 85 millimeters till the month of July,” informed Lotus. Rains in the morning brought down day temperature by at least 4 degree Celsius to the joy of tourists in Kashmir and giving relief to the local people. Monday was the hottest day in last seven years in Kashmir as the maximum temperature rose to 35.4 degrees Celsius in Srinagar. It was the second hottest day for Kashmir in the last decade. A weather monitoring official in Srinagar said the maximum temperature dropped 4 notches in the capital to settle at 29.1 degree Celsius as against 33 degree Celsius on Wednesday. Meanwhile, rain water accumulation in Srinagar resulted in traffic jams and many localities were thrown out of bounds for pedestrians. People accused Srinagar Municipal Corporation of being negligent over the issue as no immediate relief was provided by operating government machinery to drain out the accumulated water. “Inefficient drainage system in the heart of summer capital is proving to be a reason of annoyance for commuters, tourists and shopkeepers. Following the rainfall, the roads and drains in Lal Chowk were inundated while many old city localities were also swamped with drain water pouring in from leakages in the system,” said commuters. Many link roads near business establishments and bus stops in Lal Chowk were seen inundated Thursday morning that irked commuters and travelers who had to wade through the water. Roads through city’s commercial hub besides Residency Road and Regal Chowk were water-logged after a few hours of rain. Water-logging on roads was also witnessed in Sarai Bala, Hazuri Bagh and Magarmal Bagh areas. Traffic jams were witnessed across the city putting people to discomfort. “Srinagar city does not have conventional rainwater sewers. However, several pump stations and dewatering mobile pumps pressed into use by Srinagar Municipal Corporation have proved to be insufficient in addressing the water logging problems,” alleged locals.
