Sigh. I keep trying. Really, I do. [Warning: Politics Ahead] I dont like posting about politics, because its offensive. But since no one researches anything before sharing it, I feel a balance must be struck. Regarding the latest alleged Monsanto Protection Act that seems to have everyone upset, please consider this: First, this original story started in March of 2013, not 2014, about a bill begun in 2012, so this is old news being pushed as new. Second, it is not a protection act. The so-called act is in fact a rider added to a farmers bill, the Agriculture Appropriations Bill, by Republicans, not Obama, in favor of the Big Agriculture lobby for whom they serve, which is run by chem-tech corporations, not farmers as one might assume. As an added bonus for Republicans, the Agriculture Appropriations Bill contains language that ties its funding fate to the Affordable Care Act. This measure was added, as all riders are, to force the other party to swallow a bitter pill. Whether you like the ACA or the AAB or not, this is pure politics. Third, unless you are completely new to this country, you should know that presidents do not make the bills. Congress and all its members make bills. And we all know how seamless that process is. The president will then sign a bill into law if he agrees with the majority of it, or veto it outright. Fourth, Obama made the decision that the ACA was composed of more profound substance than the pseudo-science powering the AAB. Right or wrong, I wholly believe that the direct benefits of a nationwide insurance program is far greater than the belief that the government is secretly poisoning us. On purpose. Despite my beliefs, this original draft of the bill was killed in 2013. Fifth, the latest 2014 incarnation of the Monsanto Protection Act is the same Republican-led pitch as originally written in 2013. Unlike the previous attempts, where it was squashed by opposing voices, the bill was linked to Obamas ACA, which provided leverage. Obama, like all presidents, signed in some bad to get the good. Which leads me to: Sixth, no one in this scenario is wholly at fault unless youre playing the, everything falls on the president card, in which case then I will throw back every bitter pill swallowed by every president before him. This conversation has nothing to do with Obama, or Republicans, or Democrats, and has everything to do with people, Politicians and Facebook Warriors alike, making blanket assertions without researching their claims. And finally: Seventh, nothing I write here will change your mind. I have wasted 75 minutes reading up on this entire subject and composing a public response that will only encourage my side to believe what they already believe and embolden the other side to continue feeling the need to educate the sheep and thus nothing changes. So I now release you to your normally scheduled Facebooking of LOL Cats and angry memes. snopes/politics/business/mpa.asp
