Sigma Single Letter Chapters - Iota Chapter Langston University - Langston, OK Established on March 12, 1897 as the Colored Agricultural and Normal University (CANU), Langston University was founded in the all-black town of Langston, Oklahoma. Led by its first President Inman Edward Page–who is known as “the grand old man of education”–the university grew in size and in student body. The school also notably boasted both industrial-agricultural training and a liberal arts curriculum. On April 5, 1941, Iota Chapter was organized on the campus of Langston University, Langston, Oklahoma. Seven enthusiastic young women had been organized into an Aurora Club by Sorors Georgiana Ellison and Noneta White. Saturday morning, the Central Region Syntaktes, Soror Ernestine Steele, arrived. The initiation was held on that Saturday night, beginning about 11:30 pm. (This was the custom at Langston with the sororities and fraternities). After a most complete initiation, part of which took place at the stadium and part in the Cosmetology Department of which Soror Ellison was an instructor, the newly made sorors serenaded faculty members, sorority and fraternity classmates, sweethearts and others. The girls then quickly put on pretty dresses for the banquet which ended a great occasion in their lives. The first Basileus of Iota was Soror Marquetta Fashee. Charter members were: Elyse Blye, Erma Brown, Beatrice Caldwell, Georgiana Ellison, Marquetta Fashee, Clovis Kircum, Eula Mae La Chapelle, Mary Ellen Nave, and Noneta White. It is amazing to see what arose out of that land grant in the 1890s! The Iota Chapter is still going strong at Langston University!
