Since the Constitution only dictates what the government can do, - TopicsExpress

Since the Constitution only dictates what the government can do, the First Amendment cannot possibly prevent a private employer from firing someone because they dont like the persons speech. However, the employer in question is a public school, i.e. the government. While I think there is a compelling public interest in not having racists working in public schools, its an interesting question whether firing someone from any government job, including a job at a school, over speech they engage in on their own time, violates the First Amendment.
