Sins of The Tongue : Saeed bin Jubair R.A. narrated that the Holy Prophet SAWS said:”When a person awakens in the morning, all the body parts humbly request the tongue that, fear Allah regarding us because we are connected to you. If you remain straight forward, we too shall remain straight forward, but if you deviate, we too shall deviate.”[Mishkat] It is quite evident from the above Hadith that the tongue is a big blessing of Allah, it should be used correctly and justly and not misused. It is the tongue that gives evidence of one being believer or a disbeliever. The tongue has the capacity to be used for good or evil.At times, just one sentence uttered from the tongue becomes reason for either man’s destruction or increase in his honour and rewards.Beware! Each and every word uttered from the tongue will be accounted for. “This is Our Record speaks about you with truth.Verily, We were recording what you used to do (i.e.Our angels used to record your deeds.”[Al-Jathiyah 45:29] Think before you speak: Mentioned below are some of the sins of the tongue, which unfortunately most of us do not even consider as sins, and from which every Muslim should save himself. “O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another.Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?. And fear Allah. You would hate it (so hate back biting). And fear Allah.Verily, Allah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful.”[Al-Hujrat 49:12] Narrated Abu Hurairah R.A.:Allah’s Messenger SAWS said:”Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales, and do not look for other’s faults, and do not do spying on one another, and do not practise ‘Najsh’[Najsh means to offer a high price for something in order to allure another customer who is interested in the thing] and do not be jealous of one another and do not hate one another, and do not desert (stop talking to) one another. And O Allah’s worshippers! Be brothers!.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.8, Hadith No.92] Narrated Hudhaifah R.A.: I heard the Prophet SAWS saying:”A Qattat” ["Qattat" is a person who conveys disagreeable, false information from one person to another with intention of causing harm and enmity between them] will not enter Paradise.”[Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.8, Hadith No.82] Narrated Ibn Abbas R.A.;Allah’s Messenger SAWS passed by two graves and said:”Both of them (persons in the grave) are being tortured, and they are not being tortured for a major sin. This one used not to save himself from being soiled with his urine, and the other used to go about with calumnies (among the people to rouse hostilities, e.g. one goes to a person and tells him that so-and-so says about him such and such evil things).” The Prophet SAWS then asked for a green branch of a date-palm tree, split it into two pieces and planted one on each grave and said, “It is hoped that their punishment may be abated till those two pieces of the branch get dried***”[Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.8, Hadith No.78][*** This action was a kind of invocation on the part of the Prophet SAWS for the deceased persons.][Fath Al-Bari, Vol.1,Page No.332] Sins of the Tongue: (1)Doubts and Suspicion (2)Inquisitiveness/Spying(Curiosity) (3)Back Biting (4)Calumny/Telltale/Scandal Monger (5)Lies/Lying (6)Taunt (7)Cursing (8)Slander (9)Anger (10)Jealousy (11)To keep Reminding of a Favour (12)Hatred and Contempt (13)Indecent Conversation (14)Making Fun of Others (15)Verbal Abuse (16)To Feel Happy When others Are In Trouble (17)Keeping Bad Titles (18)To Look Down Upon Others (19)Imitating others. “O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group , it may be that the latter are better than the former.Nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former.nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it to insult one’s brother after having faith [i.e.to call your Muslim brother (a faithful believer) as:"O sinner", or "O wicked"]. and whosoever does not repent, then such are indeed Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.).[Al-Hujurat 49:11] (1) Adee bin Hatim R.A. who said:”save yourselves from hell, even if it be by giving only half a date (of a palm tree) as charity; and one who does not have even that, should at least speak nicely.”[Bukhari and Muslim] (2) Iyaz bin Himar R.A. who said:The Messenger of Allah SAWS said:”Allah the Most Exalted, has revealed to me that you should show courtesy and be cordial with each other, so that nobody should consider himself superior to another or harm him.”[Muslim] (3) Abu Hurairah R.A. who said:The Messenger of Allah said:”Strictly avoid envy because envy consumes good deeds as fire consumes dry wood.’[Abu Dawud] (4) Abu Hurairah R.A. who said: The Messenger of Allah SAWS said:”Avoid suspicion, for suspicion is the greatest lie.Do not be inquisitive about one another, or spy on one another.Do not outbid one another with a view to raising the price.Do not feel jealous and do not hold grudges against one another.Do not backbite, but be the servants of Allah like brothers amongst yourselves.”[Bukhari and Muslim] (5) Anas R.A. who said:The Messenger of Allah SAWS said:”Make things easy and convenient, don’t make them harsh and difficult.Give cheers and glad tidings and do not create hatred.”[Bukhari and Muslim] (6) Muawiyah R.A. who said:I heard the Messenger of Allah SAWS saying:”When you persue the private life of people, you lead them to corruptin.”[Shuab Al-Iman-Baihaqi]
