Skin tags are harmless soft growths which can appear anywhere on our bodies. Here we offer some natural pain free solutions. These small flap-like benign tags can be unsightly if in an obvious place and some people are happier to get them removed. There are medical procedures, such as cryo-therapy, chemical removal or even surgically cutting them, to get rid them but these can be costly and sometimes painful. They commonly occur on the eyelids, neck, armpits, groin folds, and under breasts. Medical help should be sought if they are near your eyes however. Almost anyone may develop a skin tag at some point in their life and contrary to old wives tales, removing a skin tag does NOT cause more to grow. Here are some natural remedies that you can use at home to remove these skin tags: 1. TEA TREE OIL Tea tree oil is a well known anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal oil and has many uses in natural health. With skin tags this oil will dry out the skin tag which means it will painlessly fall off on its own with no other intervention needed. Ensure the area is clean and dry. Then simply soak a clean cotton ball in warm water and then add 3 drops of tea tree oil. Gently massage the skin tag with the cotton ball – this should be repeated three times a day. Do not apply the tea tree direct to the skin without soaking the cotton ball in water first as described, as it could cause additional skin irritation issues. 2. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Apple cider vinegar quickly destroys the skin tag tissue quickly and easily. Soak a cotton ball in 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and apply to the clean and dry skin tag. Saturate the skin by squeezing and massaging as you apply it. This can be repeated three times a day. If you find you are more sensitive to the acid in the vinegar (it may sting or itch slightly) then you can dilute it lightly with water prior to soaking the cotton ball. 3. OREGANO OIL Three of the main components in oregano oil are arvacrol, thymol and p-cymene, all of which have excellent anti-bacterial properties. They have also been shown to be anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, anti-melanomic and anti-oxidative. All of these properties combined make it an ideal essential oil for using on skin conditions. Using a carrier oil such as coconut oil, mix 4 to 6 drops of this chosen oil with 2 – 3 drops of oregano oil and apply directly to the skin tag. The carrier oil avoids any irritation or redness, but will not lessen the effect of the oregano oil. Again this dries out the tag so it will fall off of it’s own accord. If applied three times a day the tag should be gone in a month. 4. LEMON JUICE The citric acid in lemon juice will dry out a skin tag as the acid will make the cells decompose naturally. Lemon juice is also a great anti-septic. Rub a cotton ball across the cut surface of a freshly sliced lemon and apply directly to the skin tag. There is no need to rinse. As with the other treatments it is most effective if repeated three times daily until the tag just falls away. 5. DANDELION STEM JUICE Dandelion juice , from the stem and the root of the dandelion, is renowned for its high levels of calcium, potassium, iron, beta-carotene, and vitamin C and is extremely effective in treating various skin conditions like blisters, acne, corns as well as skin tags. You can just squeeze a dandelion stem and use the milky juice directly by applying it straight onto the affected area of skin and covering with a band-aid. Repeat up to four times a day, always cleaning and drying between reapplying. The dried skin tag will fall off. (Note re allergies: if you have a known allergy to similar plants including daisies, marigolds, ragweed, chrysanthemums avoid dandelions as they have similar allergens) 6. GARLIC Fresh garlic has strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which can help a number of skin conditions including skin tags. Grind four fresh garlic cloves into a paste and apply directly to the tag. A large band-aid can help keep the paste in contact with the skin for as long as possible through the day. Of course this might not be the most pleasant of the options but it does work , often within a few days. 7. FIG STEM JUICE Fig stem juice is effective in addressing skin issues as it helps to balance the alkaline-acid balance. Blend a handful of figs to extract the powerful juice and apply directly to the tag. Reapply up to four times a day. the tag should fall off within three or four weeks.
