Slaves in Bhutan Photos: RGS "Every well to do villager has slaves; the leading men have 100 or more. They are treated better than paid servants; the masters feel that the latter receiving wages can be made to do more work. Though the slaves are allowed to move about freely, (for, when not employed on work, they have but to attend a roll-call morning and evening,) yet they do not run away very much." Per Achuk Tsering (who made enquiries on Bhutan) on 5/2/10 at Paw. "An interesting case is that of a Tamang, Bhutia who was captured from the district of Jalpaiguri 10 years ago, having been made drunk and taken over the border. He speaks Bhutanese like a native and has almost forgotten Nepalese. He is employed in the Paro Penlop’s band and does not attempt to run away. The slaves like every body else in Bhutan, carry swords.” Handwritten draft book on Bhutan, Untitled, Undated and Unpublished. Charles Bell courtesy his granddaughter.
