Snowden IS a traitor by definition of law. He is not a whistleblower because he used improper methods to "blow the whistle". There are right and wrong ways to do this. Regardless of his intentions, there are correct and incorrect ways to be a whistle blower. Read the Sarbanes-Oxly Act. Anyone has the right to PROPERLY report. As a CIA employee he had certain distinct requirements of "secrecy" as they pertain to his job. He violated his contract, and his oath. He did so with completely inappropriate methods and in the process risked the lives of others not just his. There are appropriate ways to have made this public without "leaking" the information for the sake of sensationalism. Had he chosen to use appropriate means to make this public, and reveal the truth of what is happening in this country he would be a legitimate whistle blower.
