So I finally gave in to watching Lone Scherfig’s One Day, which I kept on delaying because I had a feeling that I was in for a cliche. Only it was. It didn’t go well. Sort of. Later on, perhaps, perhaps further, I will tell you how, in retrospect, I find myself loving and, at the same time, hating this movie, and how it made me weep not because of the story but because of the movie itself. Let me start by saying that this movie is inconsistent in terms of natural progression, screenplay, and character osmosis. There are times that the movie is interesting, then there are times I wish I was watching something else. Im thinking that this inconsistency made me get through the movie. Another concern I’d like to point out is that I didn’t feel any chemistry between Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Jim Sturgess, I strongly believe, is a miscast here. Anne Hathaway’s acting in this movie was good, with all her facial expressions and body movements. Although One Day has a good plot, the movie is oddly constrained and lacked palpable affections. Aesthetically speaking, the problems lie in: execution, screenplay, and cinematography. One Day could have been made better than this, and this is what I propose: Put up another production team and recreate this movie, I would be the first one in line buying a movie ticket.
