So I have been hesitant to post anything about what has been going on with me but here goes..it all started about a month ago thinking I had just pulled a muscle in my thigh and kept working and doing everything I normally do ...ride my horse, walk 3 dogs, cook, clean etc. By the 3rd week it started to get worse....went to the Dr. ruled out a blood clot, and they said take ibuprofen, do some stretches in the mean time I was still doing chiropractic care and accupuncture...then by the 3rd week started to get worse went back to the Dr. got xrays and an MRI done it showed L 2 bulging disc and L 3 and L4 had herniated. So the Dr. Gives me muscle relaxers and pain pills with a script to do PT puts me out of work for 2 weeks. She did not feel I needed an ortho at this time. I So i go and fill the scripts and try to schedule PT thru a place she recommended. ...they couldnt get me started until the following week! So I limped home and tried to get into Upstate Bone and Joint (keep in mind I am already an established pt there) and they couldnt see me for another week as well! By the time Saturday hit I was in so much pain I could barely walk, Sunday I was literally crippled and in terrible agony. Monday morning after not sleeping for 3 days I called Upstate Bone and joint and told them I was in horrible pain and if they could squeeze me in or put me on a cancelation list but nope no can do! I was absolutely floored and bawling now because I was so frustrated with no one was taking me seriously. I did everything from ice , heat, tens unit, acupuncture, chiropractor, meds, rest and I was steadily getting worse. My brother happened to call me at my most distressed moment and told me to hold on and he would call me back. He called me back and was able to get me in with his neurosurgeon in Albany. ( my brother has had 2 successful back surgeries as well as my Mom and my other sister too thru this surgeon) We were able to get in the very next day so off to St Peters spine and neurosurgery office we went. By this time I had lost all feeling in my right leg now which totally freaked me out. From crippling searing pain to total numbness. They evaluated me, prescribed real pain meds looked at my MRI and sent me to get an epidural injection in my spine. They were so professional and very accomodating. While I am not 100 % I am sooooo much better now and its getting a little better everyday! I still have some residual numbness and pain in my foot and leg but certainly no where near what I was before the injection. I pray for continued progress and hopefully soon can get back to work and normal activity! So to all my EMS friends take good care of your back....mine did not happen over night it is cumulative damage over the years. Dont laugh but I am going to look into doing some yoga and core strengthening exercises when I am cleared and hopefully I can avoid any more surgery! Whew!!!
