So Im in a movie theater and the first trailer starts. Its Cameron Diaz being sassy-mean to a bunch of orphan girls, and when one of them calls Diaz Miss Hannigan, the young woman sitting next to me literally gasps with joy, bringing her hands to her mouth in shocked amazement, and whisper-squeals Miss Hannigan! She started tugging on her dates arm with glee; he wasnt quite sharing the same excitement. Its like her entire year was made in that moment when she realized there would be a new version of ANNIE in the world (needless to say she sang/hummed along with the songs as they were sampled in the trailer). She was so giddy. Her joy was palpable (and audible). I share that to say that I absolutely love how stories can connect so deeply with people, and mean so much. They stick with us for our entire lifetimes, and bring joy - even comfort and solace - to us, like a faithful friend who really truly knows us. Not all stories connect with all people, but all stories do connect with some people, and they make a mark that never leaves us. And thats just the coolest. (And incidentally: this same young woman, during the Desert Chase scene of RAIDERS - arguably the best and most classic action sequence in the history of the movies - opens her purse and pulls out some potently feminine hand lotion and proceeds to moisturize her hands. Im watching an all-time classic action scene with Indiana Jones and Im smelling *lavender* the whole time??!! Ugh. Girls are the worst.)
