So… It looks like I get to share some of my stories from the park some place other than just Facebook. I have a book deal. The people at Westminster John Knox Publishing have made me an offer and I have accepted it. They have published some of my favorite writers and many whom I have read in seminary (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Walter Brueggemann, Frederick Buechner, Paul Tillich, Barbara Brown Taylor, etc). I don’t think I’m a particularly good writer, but I have things to say and maybe an unusual story to tell. I am still stunned that they are willing to invest in what I have to say, but I am deeply, deeply grateful. (Special thanks to Jessica Miller Kelley who was at the center of making this deal happen!) Its about what to do when everything you every dreamed about comes crashing down and your dreams get shattered. It is about feeling like a failure and having to starting over. Ive never read a book about failed dreams. There are a lot of books about how to ACHIEVE your dreams. I know. I read them all. (Didn’t take). I plan to write about what its like folding jeans at the GAP when you’re 30 and selling oil changes door-to-door and wondering how you got there. Then, at 40, realizing you have to stop this and admit defeat…and try to begin to figure out a new life. Its about looking back and seeing Gods with you thru all of it. Here’s the thing…part of my obligation now is to promote the damn thing! Most of you know that I am a PR whore with AfterHours. Guilty. I think we (those whose job IS religion in one form or another) have an obligation to share the good news or, well, it isn’t news. The book will also be about my continuing trip through organized religion and the birth of AfterHours. It will be about many of you (Though I will change the names to protect the innocent!) At any rate, I will be promoting it on FaceBook and Twitter (and probably door-to-door….that oil change work is about to pay off!) There is an expectation of promotion from the publisher and I would hope when the day comes, you might even buy it. If you ever had your dreams crushed, or were ever pissed off at organized religion or you just want to read about some good in the world, I think youll dig it. Forgive me in advance for the shameless promoting I will do. I am worried many of you will get sick of me. Some of you already are. I am scared and thrilled and humbled but most of all, I am so excited I just might piddle! Wish me luck. Here goes nothing….
