So Ive been thinking about this a bit and Id like to open it up for thoughts. How do you have really hard public conversations that could really upset people? I feel like I hear a lot about creating safe space and so on, but I wonder if theres actually a way to create safe space for everyone in a conversation? We had a conversation at BK Commune last week that was really good and vigorous and intense, but it definitely wasnt safe - people said some things that were true but not easy to hear. And people confronted each other on their BS. And Im not just talking about the obvious hot button issues like class, race, gender, etc. How do you talk about good work vs. bad work? How do you have a constructive conversation about how resources are allocated and that competition is real and that there are some artists who are better than others? How do we balance working for a more fair economic structure for all artists, while acknowledging that some artists will be more successful than others? Right now there is a huge disparity between rock star artists and everyone else and the gap should be narrowed but at the same time, the argument can -and has been - made that there is too much supply for too little demand. Is it necessary to reduce supply? How does that decision get made?
